Upgrading a Barn Camera System, WiFi and Internet: A Rural IT Case Study

Barn camera system, WiFi and rural Internet upgrade for a horse property, including remote monitoring and property wide connectivity.

It all started with a camera system that would not stay reliable.

A client who owns a horse property had been dealing with ongoing problems with the cameras around her barn. Cameras would lose their connection to the NVR, the system was unreliable, and remote access was not giving her the dependable visibility she needed when she was away. This was particularly important because she is an anesthesiologist who travels for work and relies on the cameras to keep an eye on what is happening at the property when she cannot physically be there.


She was not simply checking the cameras because she wanted a security system. She used them to make sure things around the property were operating as they should and to verify that animal feed orders were arriving when expected. When you travel frequently and have a property that still needs to operate while you are away, being able to open an app and actually see what is happening can be incredibly useful.


What started as troubleshooting a barn camera system eventually became a much larger technology project involving cameras, network cabling, Internet connectivity, Starlink, WiFi, a remotely managed firewall and connectivity between buildings. It is also a good example of why I rarely look at one piece of technology in isolation. Sometimes the problem a client initially calls me about is only the starting point.


I Tried to Fix the Existing Barn Camera System First

My first recommendation was not to throw everything away and buy a new camera system. I spent multiple trips troubleshooting what the client already had because I wanted to determine what could reasonably be fixed and what could continue to be used.

Some of the cameras were having problems maintaining their connection to the NVR. As I worked through those issues, I found existing cabling that needed to be replaced and addressed those runs where they were contributing to connection problems. We also replaced the hard drive in the NVR in an attempt to keep the existing system operational.


Unfortunately, the problems eventually returned.


At the same time, dealing with the existing camera manufacturer's support was becoming more of a hassle than I felt was worthwhile for the client. We had already invested time troubleshooting the cameras, addressed cabling problems and replaced the NVR hard drive. At some point, continuing to put labor and money into an unreliable system stops being the recommendation I am comfortable making.

That was the point where I recommended replacing it.


When Does It Make More Sense to Replace a Camera System?

There is not a specific number of service calls where I automatically tell a client to replace equipment. I look at what is actually failing, what we have already tried, whether replacement parts are resolving the problem, how supportable the equipment still is and how much time the client is paying me to spend keeping an unreliable system alive.

I am generally willing to troubleshoot and preserve equipment that still makes sense to keep. Replacing everything simply because something is older is not automatically my first recommendation. At the same time, I do not want a client repeatedly paying me to fight with equipment when I no longer believe that is the best use of their money.


For this client, we reached that point.


The timing happened to work in her favor. It was around the holidays, and I found a good Black Friday deal on a Lorex system that I thought would be a better fit. She decided to take advantage of the sale, and we replaced the existing camera system.


The New Camera System Had to Be Easier to Use

The improvement was not only about installing cameras with better image quality. One of the things the client really liked about the Lorex system was the app. She found it much easier to navigate than what she had been using previously.


That mattered to me because remote access was one of her primary reasons for having the system.


A camera system can have an impressive list of technical specifications, but that does not mean much to the business owner if checking the cameras while traveling is frustrating or unreliable. For this client, being able to easily pull up the property while she was away was part of what made the replacement worthwhile.


After she had some time to use the new system, she identified additional areas where she wanted better visibility. We expanded the system by adding a switch, ordered additional cameras and I returned to install three more cameras in the dead spots she wanted covered.


I actually like that progression. Technology does not always need to be designed around the assumption that the first installation will represent every need the client will ever have. She used the system, learned where she wanted more coverage, and we were able to expand it.


The Cameras Were Not the Only Connectivity Problem

As I worked through the property, another problem became increasingly important: Internet connectivity.


The existing Internet service was creating problems for the owner when she was on the property and trying to work. She needed to use her laptop and pull up imaging as part of her work, and the connection was not giving her the experience she needed.

We ultimately replaced the existing Internet provider with Starlink.


For this particular property, replacing the previous service with Starlink resolved the Internet connectivity problems she had been experiencing. It also gave us a better foundation for the remote connectivity she needed around the property.


I want to be careful about that distinction because I do not think every farm or rural business should automatically be told to buy Starlink. Internet options vary considerably depending on location, available providers and what the business actually needs. In this client's environment, however, Starlink was the solution I implemented, and it solved the connectivity problems she had been experiencing.


I Also Needed a Way to Support the Property Remotely

I installed a firewall that I could remotely manage as part of the network.

That was important because this was not a traditional office where the owner and I were necessarily going to be sitting in the same building every day. She travels, and I wanted management access to the network so that if she experienced an issue, I had better visibility into the environment and could troubleshoot without every problem automatically requiring a trip to the property.


That is another example of how the project had expanded beyond cameras. Reliable remote camera access depended on the network and Internet connection underneath it. Supporting that environment also meant thinking about what happened when something stopped working and I was not physically standing in the barn.


Getting Reliable WiFi Where She Actually Worked

The owner also has a lounge room inside the barn that she uses as an office while she is on the property. I expanded the WiFi coverage into that area so she had a better connection where she actually wanted to sit down and work.


That may sound like a small part of a much larger project, but I think it illustrates something important about business technology. Good WiFi coverage on a diagram does not necessarily mean the technology works for the person using it. I care about whether the connection reaches the places where someone actually needs to open a laptop and get work done.


In her case, one of those places happened to be inside a barn.


Extending the Network to Another Building

There was also another building across the parking area where the owner stays when she comes into the area, and she needed WiFi there as well.


I considered using a wireless backhaul link between the barn and the other building. I have other farm environments where I use robust wireless backhaul equipment successfully, so I am certainly not opposed to that design. For this particular property, however, I preferred an underground physical connection between the buildings.


I ran network cabling through conduit across the parking area. Rather than pulling one cable and considering the job finished, I pulled two. That gave me another cable already in place if something ever happened to the primary run or if we needed the additional connection later.

I also left a pull string in the conduit.


Once the cabling was pulled and everything was in place, the conduit was buried underground. The network could then be extended into the second building so I could

provide WiFi where the owner stays.


The second cable and pull string did not make the WiFi work any better on installation day. They were there because I was thinking about what happens later. If a cable develops a problem or I need to pull something new through that conduit in the future, I have already given myself options without unnecessarily starting the entire underground portion of the project over again.


Should You Bury Cable or Use a Wireless Link Between Farm Buildings?

This is one of those questions where I do not think there is a universal answer.

For this property, I chose underground cabling. At other farms I support, I have robust wireless backhaul equipment deployed as part of the WLAN. The right choice depends on the buildings, distance, terrain, existing infrastructure, what the network needs to support and the practical realities of getting connectivity from one location to another.


A wireless link can make sense where trenching or physical cabling is impractical. A physical connection can make sense where a suitable pathway can be created and that design fits the property. There are also situations where other connectivity options need to be considered.


I would rather evaluate the property than decide on the technology before seeing the problem.


That is also why I do not think a farm, barn, kennel or another rural business should automatically buy whatever networking equipment happens to appear first in an online search. The network may eventually need to support cameras, WiFi, computers, remote work, phones, equipment or technology the owner has not added yet.


What Should You Look at When Barn Cameras Keep Disconnecting?

One of the lessons from this project is that a camera dropping offline does not automatically mean the camera itself is bad. The camera is part of a larger system, and troubleshooting may need to extend beyond the device someone can physically see mounted on the wall.

That does not mean every one of those things needs to be replaced. It means the troubleshooting needs to look far enough upstream and downstream to understand what is actually causing the problem.


Remote Monitoring on a Farm Is About More Than Security

Security is certainly one reason to install cameras around a rural property, but it is not the only one.


For this client, the cameras also provided operational visibility. When she was traveling for work, she could check the property, see whether feed deliveries had arrived and make sure things appeared to be running as expected.


That is something I think can get lost when people talk about cameras purely as security devices. Farms, horse facilities, kennels, boarding operations and other businesses spread across larger properties may use cameras to understand what is happening when the owner or manager cannot physically be everywhere at once.


Current farm camera systems are marketed around many of these same needs, including monitoring barns, gates, animals, equipment and remote areas. Current rural connectivity solutions also increasingly recognize remote monitoring as a legitimate agricultural use for reliable Internet access. Those broader trends line up closely with what this client actually needed from her property.


The Original Camera Problem Was Only the Starting Point

When this client originally needed help, the obvious problem was an unreliable camera system. If I had treated the project as nothing more than replacing a recorder or swapping cameras, I would have missed much of what she actually needed.


The cameras led us into cabling problems. Continued NVR problems eventually led to replacing the camera system. Her need for dependable remote viewing connected the cameras to the Internet service. Her work from the property exposed another connectivity problem. That led to replacing the existing ISP with Starlink. Supporting the environment remotely made a managed firewall useful. The way she used the barn led to better WiFi in her lounge and office area. The building where she stayed led to extending the physical network across the property.


Then, once she had used the new camera system, we expanded it again when she identified three additional areas where she wanted coverage.


That does not mean every barn camera project should turn into a network overhaul. It means I want to understand what the technology is supposed to accomplish before I decide what needs to change.


Building Technology Around the Business Instead of the Other Way Around

This is one of the things I enjoy about working with small businesses. Two businesses can call me with what sounds like exactly the same problem and need completely different solutions.


One farm may be a good candidate for underground cabling between buildings. Another may make much more sense with wireless backhaul. One rural property may benefit from Starlink because the available Internet options are not meeting the business's needs. Another may already have excellent wired Internet service. One owner may primarily care about security. Another may need cameras to monitor animals, deliveries and operations while traveling.


My job is not to force all of those businesses into the same technology stack.

For this client, the finished environment needed to give her reliable cameras, easier remote monitoring, better Internet connectivity, WiFi where she worked and stayed, and a network that I could support when she needed help. We also made decisions along the way that gave us room to expand instead of treating every installation as though it would never change.


The project started with cameras that kept giving her problems.

It ended with a much more usable technology environment built around how she actually uses the property.
