From Camper Wi-Fi to Home Security: A Practical Approach to IT Support

Not long ago, I was on the phone with my mom when the topic of internet came up. My parents rent a seasonal camper spot at a campground, and they mentioned how frustrating the internet has been. The campground provides free Wi-Fi, but they do not use it. They know better.
My parents have heard me talk about network security for years. They understand that public Wi-Fi can be risky, especially when it is unsecured and shared with dozens of other campers. They know it can open the door to things like data interception, tracking, or device exposure. They also know it is not reliable enough for anything important. My mom said it rarely works well anyway. Everyone at the campground complains about how slow and spotty it is, and it often drops out completely.
She said the campground owner is discouraged, especially after paying a company a significant amount of money to install the system. It never worked the way it was supposed to.
This kind of problem is something I hear often in my line of work. Technology is installed with big promises but little follow-through. My parents asked if I could help take a look this summer while we are visiting New England. I was more than happy to say yes. Outdoor Wi-Fi projects are something I really enjoy. They give me the chance to solve a problem that affects real people in their day-to-day lives. And in this case, I also get to help someone who is a hardworking friend of my parents.
Building a Better Setup for Streaming and Browsing
My parents do not need much. Their goal is to be able to stream Roku on rainy days and check email or browse on their iPads. Luckily, there is a local cable internet provider that offers hookups at the campground. That gives us a solid and secure foundation to work with.
Instead of dragging equipment back and forth between their house and the camper each season, we are going to create a dedicated and permanent setup. Here is what I plan to do:
Help them purchase a cable modem that stays at the camper
Install a security gateway with built-in Wi-Fi
Enable remote management so I can monitor updates, check for security issues, and provide support if anything goes wrong
This way, they no longer have to struggle with poor cell service and spotty Wi-Fi. They will have a stable internet connection that works whenever they need it. And I will no longer have to troubleshoot over the phone, guessing which light is blinking or why FaceTime keeps dropping mid-call.
Improving Their Home Network Too
While we are updating the camper, it also makes sense to improve their home network. Their current router is older and starting to show its age. I will be replacing it with the same kind of security gateway I am installing at the camper. It will support the latest Wi-Fi 6 standard for better speed and reliability.
Along with the new gateway, I will install a small managed network switch and an outdoor access point. That will give them strong Wi-Fi coverage all the way to their backyard. They love sitting on their deck and relaxing with their iPads, so this will make their experience much more enjoyable.
Better Security While They Travel
Another concern my parents brought up was home security. They plan to spend more time at the camper this year and do not want to leave their house vulnerable while they are away. We talked about several options, including cloud-based cameras, but I decided to go with something more reliable.
I am recommending a Lorex Fusion camera system. These cameras record locally to a physical recorder, which means they will continue working even if the internet goes down. The system also includes an app that lets my parents view live footage and receive alerts if motion is detected. This gives them peace of mind without having to worry about monthly storage fees or service interruptions.
I have installed Lorex systems for multiple clients over the past few years and they have consistently been impressed by the quality and dependability. It is a great fit for anyone who wants simple, secure surveillance without ongoing costs.
Time for a Laptop Health Check
While I am in town, I also plan to take a look at both of their laptops. With Windows 10 support ending in October 14th, 2025, it is important to know whether their devices can be upgraded to Windows 11. I will check the hardware, run compatibility tools, and see if their systems are up to the task.
If not, we will look at new laptop options while I am there so I can get them set up properly. I will help them pick something reliable, transfer their files and settings, install the software they use, and make sure everything is connected and backed up. There will be no guesswork or frustration for them. They will be set up and ready to go with a system that works the way it should.
Internet Options for Campgrounds, RVs, and Remote Locations
For many people, finding reliable internet while traveling or staying in a seasonal location can feel like a constant challenge. There are a few options worth exploring, each with its own pros and cons.
Campground Wi-Fi This is often included with your stay, but it can be slow and overloaded. If too many people are connected, performance drops quickly. It is also not secure, so it should not be used for sensitive tasks like banking or work-related access.
Mobile Hotspots and Cellular Routers These use cell data plans to create your own Wi-Fi network. They are great for flexibility, but they depend heavily on the quality of your cell signal. In remote areas, this can be unreliable or nonexistent. Plans can also get expensive depending on your data usage.
Starlink or Satellite Internet This is becoming more popular with RVers and off-grid travelers. It works almost anywhere with a clear view of the sky, but the equipment is bulky and setup can be tricky. It also comes with a higher price tag.
Hardwired Cable or DSL Some seasonal campgrounds, like the one my parents use, offer cable internet service. This is often the best choice if you want speed, security, and reliability. Once installed, it acts just like your internet at home. This is the option we are choosing for my parents.
Choosing the right option depends on how long you plan to stay, how much data you use, and how important reliability is to your daily routine.
Do Not Forget Cybersecurity
While setting up a reliable internet connection and installing the right equipment are important, keeping your devices secure is just as critical. Whether you are working remotely, streaming at the camper, or leaving your home network running while you are away, cybersecurity needs to be part of the plan.
Here are a few steps I always recommend:
Install trusted antivirus or endpoint protection software on laptops, tablets, and phones
Enable firewalls on both devices and routers
Make sure your system and apps are set to update automatically
Use secure, unique passwords and enable two-factor authentication
Remove outdated or unused apps, especially browser extensions
Consider a password manager to keep everything safe and organized
Security is not something you want to deal with after something goes wrong. A few simple steps now can prevent a lot of problems later.
Helping People and Small Businesses Stay Connected
This project is personal. I am helping my parents feel more comfortable, secure, and connected. But this is also exactly what I do for small businesses, remote workers, and property owners every day. Technology should make life easier, not more complicated. Whether it is upgrading a home network, securing a vacation property, or building reliable internet access in hard-to-reach places, I bring practical solutions that work.
If you manage or own a property that offers wide open spaces, I can help design Wi-Fi networks that actually work the way they should. Whether it is an RV park, campground, summer camp, vineyard, or a venue that hosts weddings and events, strong and consistent Wi-Fi coverage matters. Your guests, visitors, and team members all rely on it. A properly planned and installed network can make a huge difference, not just in customer experience but also in safety and operations.
If you are trying to stay connected while traveling, working from a seasonal property, or just want to improve your existing setup, I am here to help. These systems do not need to be complicated. They just need to be designed with the right tools and a plan that works for your lifestyle or business.
